Who are my Local La Jolla Groomers? We Interview the Ladies of Gloria's Pet Salon in La Jolla

We are going to start off our zen local groomer feature with Michele and her daughter Sydney of Gloria's Pet Salon located at 7730 Herschel Ave, in La Jolla. Take it away ladies!

When deciding on a groomer what specific traits should they have and what are the top 3 questions to ask?

Sydney    “Patience.”

Michele    “For me as an experienced groomer, first ask their experience. To me being kind to the animals is the most important part, and their safety. Safety for the animals and patience is more important to me than anything.  People’s animals are cared for properly and kindly, and they go home happy little dogs and not stressed out and scared. Second of all, their skills. Of course you want your dog to look nice , that’s important in the grooming industry. Their dog leaves and they get what they paid for. Nice cut, with their ears, nails done, and all the different things that are important to the owner who is paying money to have a service done. And then for me as a groomer who has been a teacher and also owned many shops, a reliable person to work with. Somebody who shows up for work. Reliable, clean, neat and orderly.  And also has a good customer service orientation.”

How often do you recommend to get your dog groomed and why?

Sydney     “Of course it depends on the dog, but typically every 6-8 weeks, because their coat might get to long and then become matted.”

Michele         “This way everything stays kept up; empty the anal gland, check and clean the ears, and cut and file the nails. Any longer the dogs get super long nails, ears get full of hair, and possibly infections could start that you won’t notice if you don’t go every 6-8 weeks.”

What’s your favorite part about your job?

Sydney    “I mean I get to play with puppies all day, you know that’s kind of in it of itself. The customers too. Everybody’s so nice here, they’re just so awesome!  It’s fun to see all the really fluffy ones that come in, the really interesting jobs, like Max, who comes in every week. Big projects of fun!”

Fabulous Max, the standard poodle!

How do you soothe a dog’s grooming anxiety?

Sydney    “We are a stress free environment. We will talk to them, low tones tend to work with that. And anything the dog isn’t comfortable with, we normally will try do it in a way they are comfortable with. If not, we can leave that part out.”

Michele     “We also have the other groomer sometimes hold, pet, and talk to them while somebody does something they may be scared of or aren’t enjoying.  If they are scared of getting their nails trimmed, we will have the other groomer pet and love on them while the groomer is doing the nail job on them.”

 How can I control my dog’s fur/shedding?

Sydney    “Coming in more regular is definitely a big help. The blow dryer blows out most of the hair. Brushing as much as you can, is always helpful, especially with the hairier dogs.”

Michele    “Brush your dog frequently at home. It’s one way an owner in between grooming can get rid of the shedding. I recommend brushing way more than bathing. If you can’t bathe your dog brush it, it really makes a difference.”

Can I teach my dog to let me trim their nails?

Sydney    “I think it depends on the dog. Usually they are a little better for us than they are for mom and dad. Essentially with the brushing and the nail trimming you can definitely do it yourself. I know there are Youtube videos, but you should definitely talk to your vet before you attempt this.”

Michele    “You need to know how to do it first of all.  If you don’t know how to do it properly without cutting too short I recommend a professional. This way the dog doesn’t get afraid. If you do cut it too short one time, then they are going to be unsure of you from now on. You take a crash course in it first and than try it. And if your dog’s really fussy I jut really recommend a professional. It’s so much easier on them to have us do it quickly and no stress involved.

Please share a funny/memorable grooming story.

Michele    “A lot of time people do not even recognize their own dog when they come back and they’ve had a hair cut. Of course it’s a dog that hasn’t had a hair cut in a long time. People have literally not recognized their own dog. You would think they know their own dog, but a lot of times they look so different the people will literally not recognize them. They ask “Is that mine,” or “Are you sure that’s her?”

Sydney with adorable Teddy!

The Rescued Dog

The founders of The Rescued Dog came together during volunteer work at a local dog rescue. They recognize in each other a mutual respect for their human friends and the dogs they were helping to rescue. When the time came to start their own rescue, their collective mission was clear: save at-risk dogs from high-kill shelters and place them in loving, forever homes for the benefit of the dogs and humans alike.  They believe the best way to end pet overpopulation and animal cruelty is a unified front with local shelters, other rescue groups and the community. While The Rescued Dog is currently a foster-based rescue, their long-term goal is to have a kennel and training facility, which will enable them to increase their number of rescues and take time to train and, if needed, rehabilitate dogs in need.

Who are my Local Clairemont Vets? We Get to Know Dr. Hardy of Lifetime Animal Care Center

Happy Friday! We are back with anther zen local veterinarian feature, this time in the Clairemont area with Dr. Hardy of Lifetime Animal Care Center.

Dr Hardy has been a veterinarian for 36 years. He currently live in Scripps Ranch with his wife, Margaret. They share their home with their 18 pound cat, Pliny. His interest in animals began when he was growing up in Wisconsin.  His family had a menagerie of chickens, ducks, dogs, cats and horses, but his real respect for animal developed during the many summers he spent on his uncle’s dairy farm.  Working with the cows and calves and seeing how well they were treated and cared for made him want to somehow be involved with animals.  He moved to California after high school and eventually received his degree in veterinary medicine from the University of California, Davis. He felt he owed something to the Wisconsin dairy industry for establishing his interest in animals and moved back there to work as a dairy vet.

After four years, his wife Margaret and he decided that California had more opportunities for their family than Wisconsin, so they returned, moving to San Diego in 1984. He purchased Lifetime Animal Care Center, then called Clairemont Square Veterinary Clinic, in 1986. They started with one doctor and two veterinary assistants. Since then, through the overwhelming support of their clients, they have been able to expand the hospital and have grown tremendously.

What he enjoys most is getting to know his clients, seeing what their pets mean to them and how they bring quality to each others' lives. He enjoys helping the pets in any way he can to make their lives, and the lives of their owners, more comfortable.

What  are the top 3 questions to ask when deciding on a veterinarian?

"First, I would try to meet the doctor and get a tour of the hospital.  Be aware of cleanliness, odors, and have them show you the medical equipment used (i.e. Are they using updated equipment such as digital x-rays, digital dental x-rays, ultrasound?)  Secondly, ask how often pets should be seen for routine, healthy checkups.  Finally, ask how important the doctor believes nutrition & diet is for the health of your pet."

What’s the most common question you receive from an animal’s owner?

"That’s a hard one to narrow down, but I guess it would be “What and how often should I feed my pet?”  That indicates to me that owners are concerned about what they can do at home to maintain the health of their pets."

What is the most common reason an animal comes to see you?

"It’s for annual wellness checkups.  Again, that indicates the owner’s concern for the well-being of their pet."

What is your favorite breed of dog and why?

"I don’t think I have a favorite breed.  I really like them all.  The more important thing for me is that they are well socialized, well behaved and friendly."

How often should you bathe your dog?

"Basically, you should bathe your dog as needed.  Perhaps monthly for a dog with healthy skin, all the way to every 1-2 days for a dog with medical conditions."

What is your number one piece of advice to give a client when getting a brand new puppy?

Have them checked out by a veterinarian to ensure they are healthy, properly vaccinated & dewormed.  And make sure they are socialized with other dogs and people – including puppy classes.  The basic socialization period for puppies is between 4 weeks and 4-5 months old so don’t delay.  A good website to check out is www.indoorpet.osu.edu.

A big thank you to Dr. Hardy, Dana the Hospital Manager, and the team at Lifetime Animal Care Center, for agreeing to participate in our second zen veterinarian blog feature! For more information please check out their website

Zen Dog Spotlight: Rosie

Zen Dog Spotlight: Rosie

We are back with another Zen Dog Spotlight featuring our energetic and fun loving Boston Terrier, Rosie! She is an instant ray of sunshine to everyone she meets!  Rosie has been featured on our blog including; Zen Dogs New Year Resolutions,  and Zen Dogs > El Nino, along with being featured on our Instagram and Facebook page showing off that adorable mug. Rosie is always ready for a new adventure, especially with our zen team member Victoria, when Mom, Lauren and Dad, Garrett are away at work. Take it away Rosie!

1. State your name and let us know a bit about your background.

"My name is Rosie, I am a Boston Terrier, and I am a little over seven years old. That is 1 year in human years. In that short time, I have lived in Florida, and traveled across the country. When I first met Lauren and Garrett, my parents, I had a good feeling about them. We make a great team. I have learned to be very photogenic, as Lauren has probably taken 1 million pictures of me. I love doing things outside and exploring new places. San Diego has been great with all the awesome places to hike and dog friendly spots. I really enjoy other dogs and people my own size, like kids. You would think I kissed the Blarney Stone with how much I can go on about myself. Next question!"

2. What’s your favorite toy and why?

"Now you have me thinking. I am really lucky, and get new toys quite often. While I really enjoy them all, my Chuck-It toys are my favorite. I love going for a walk to the park or beach to play fetch. I am really good at grabbing the ball out of mid air. I get a kick out of hiding the balls throughout my house and pretending like my parents lost them. At last count, I had six! The only thing better that my Chuck-It is a Kong filled with peanut butter and frozen to the perfect temperature. I heard theses are supposed to keep a puppy occupied for a long time, but I can finish one in no time!"

3. What does your typical day consist of, and what would your ideal day include?

"A typical day starts with me waking up and having breakfast. I like to wake up early, kind of like every day is Christmas. So, I make sure everyone is up as early as I am. I am really good at waking up my parents gently, like jumping on them and licking their faces or bringing them toys. After a nice breakfast and some time outside in the yard to play a little early morning fetch. I get to watch cartoons like Paw Patrol. I hang out and wait for Victoria to swing by. She likes to go to the park and I am always looking for another reason to go, myself. After an afternoon of playing fetch and running around with all of the other dogs, we head home. After a nice dinner, I like to walk with my parents around the neighborhood. It is nice to get out, see and be seen. On the weekends, I really enjoy shopping at Target because I get to ride around in the cart and pretend I am driving."

4. Who is your best friend and how did you meet?

"My best friend is Frig. She is the dog next door. We met, when one afternoon she was walking down the street and jumped over my fence. We played until neither of us could play any more. Since then, every time I see her leave her house I like to run outside and get her to jump the fence to play. Sometimes we like to get really muddy and run through the house when my parents open the door to check on us. Frig knows the sound of my car, so every time I come home from the park, beach, or a vacation she will burst through her screen door to play in my yard. Having Frig as a friend is great because when we play fetch in the yard, she can jump over the fence to get the ball when my parents accidentally throw it over."

5. What is the one question you wish your human would stop asking you, and the one question you wish your human would never stop asking you?

"There are a couple of questions that come to mind. I wish they would stop asking if I have to “go potty.” I mean, how embarrassing. I am over 1 years old. I know when I have to go. It is a toss up for what questions I wish they would never stop asking if I want a treat… really? I would never want them to stop asking if I want to go bye-bye, either. I really enjoy standing on my hind legs with my face out the window and my ears flopping in the wind."

6. If you were going to win an award at the "Oscar Pet Awards" would you want to win it for  1.) Cuteness 2.) Heroism/Courage 3.) Sassiness 4) Loyalty 5) Fashionista.  Give us a quick example/story of why we should pick you!

"I would pretty much be the opposite of Leonardo DiCaprio. I would win an Oscar for all 5 categories! (1) If I had a dog treat for every time I heard I was cute, I would probably be 28 pounds instead of 16. (2) I think some people underestimate my awesome hero skills because of my size. I always sleep with one eye open and am the best judge of character. One time on a road trip from Florida to Michigan, we had to pull over to take a nap. I made sure to stay away and make sure there were no strangers who came to the car. (3) While everyone would probably say I am the most humble puppy ever, I have to be honest and say that my sassiness is best seen with treats. Of course I appreciate everyone who offers a treat, but my parents give me soft Blue Buffalo salmon chews. Milk bones are thought to get excited about after that. (4) I never leave my parents side. Wherever we go and whoever is around, I am never more than arms length away from them. Sometimes I like to literally be right in their face. They might tell you that I am clingy, but it is just because I am so loyal. (5) Thanks to Lauren, she has the best style. My pink harness goes with everything and is great for everyday use. I was in Tahoe for a ski vacation over the Christmas holiday and I have the cutest winter gear! I was the envy of the entire South Lake! Don’t get me started about my birthday crown, my elf hat, or my NYE sunglasses!"

7. Any other insight you would like us to know?

"I really do love my parents, even when they make up songs about me or have conversations with me. However, just because I like puppy-chinos, does not mean I have an Italian accent. They may think I don’t understand them, but I am working on my English. I certainly know what “walk”, “beach”, “dinner”, and “treat” means. I am “The American Gentleman”, I mean Gentlewoman. This is not to be confused with the Frenchies or Frenchtons. While they are great, Boston's are the best!"

"I really love sleeping under the covers and am very thankful for everything I have and have done. I am surrounded by wonderful people and really enjoy my walks with Victoria or hanging out with DogZenergy at the La Jolla Market. I am always looking for new dog friendly places and cannot wait for my next adventure!"
