What Commands Should my Dog Know? 7 Essential Commands Every Dog Should Know

Bringing a new furry friend is always is an exciting experience! If you are bringing home a puppy or an older dog, there are certain basic commands every dog should know.

1. Come - This command is used very frequently, and tells your dog to stop what they are doing and come back to you. This command is especially important if they have broken away from the leash, or ran out the door when company arrived. This command will help control the situation, and keep the dog out of harm's way.

2. Sit - This is a simple command every dog must know. Often, dogs get excited when they're about to go outside, or head out for a walk. Dogs also sometimes grow anxious waiting while their dinner is being fixed, or bark at everyone who walks by their house. By teaching your dog to sit and wait, this will help surpress their excitement. This way you can answer the door, or get their leash and collar put on them in a zen calm manner.

3. Stay - This is a harder command for some dogs to learn, but definitely worth the time to teach it. At times, dogs don't always comprehend there's a chance they are in danger.  Stop can prevent them from running in front of a car, or grabbing something they shouldn't have. Stay, is often hard for a dog, especially when they see something they want, an example would be a cat or another dog in the yard across from your home. This command is a must the dog completely understands, for their safety and yours.

4. Wait - This command is often intertwined with stay, however it is a different command for different reasons. A more energetic dog my need to held in check for a short time. The wait command tells them they cannot go yet, and must stay still and where the are until you say they may move again.

5. No - No simply tells the dog to stop what they are doing, or they can't have something. No should be used to stop unwanted behavior like jumping up on people, chewing, or biting. This simple but essential command will make communication between the dog and you crystal clear.

6. Heel - Heel will help control the dog on a walk, and also when you are around other dogs or people. This command teaches the dog not to pull on their leash, and puts them next to you to have better control. If the dog has started moving faster, creating tension on the leash, this command will control the pace of the walk,

7. Off - While you might enjoy your dog greeting you at the door after a long day by jumping up on you, this is not how everyone feels. With the off command, you are telling the dog to stay down on the ground, and not jump up. It's a great command also for keeping the dog of the furniture. Like all commands, it's always important to use the same command for the desired behavior.

These seven basic command can help keep your dog out of danger and also give you a well mannered dog who listens and follows the commands given to them. With your dog understanding these 7 commands you will continue to create a positive, safe, and Zen environment for everyone involved!

Who are my Local Vets in La Jolla? We Interview Dr. Breher of La Jolla Veterinary Hospital

With some many different options of veterinary and animal hospitals to take your furry friends, we wanted to tell you a bit about all the awesome doctors you can choose from.

We are going to start in the La Jolla area first at La Jolla Veterinary Hospital with Dr. Julie Breher. First of all, let us just say Dr. Breher has more energy then a person in their 20's! She bounced into her sparkling examination room ready to go.  Since 1997, almost 20 years now she's been a veterinarian. Born and raised locally in University City, she completed both her undergrad and graduate school at UC Davis. For 8 years, inspired by James Harriet and also being told, "this was not something a woman can do," she was a dairy cow veterinarian in Central Valley.  Dr. Breher worked exclusively with small and big dairy cow herds. As she enjoyed her job immensely, she told her husband she would go as far south as San Luis Obispo, relocating to Monterrey. in 2009 she returned home to University City where her parents still live, and in 2010 she bought the practice La Jolla Veterinary Hospital. Did we mention she has a fantastic, energetic 4 year old chocolate lab named Clyde who we were privleged to meet!

What  are the top 3 questions to ask when deciding on a Veterinarian?

"It really depends on person’s philosophies, location, and cost. The top 3 medical questions include:

  1. What is your philiosphy and recommndation on preventive care?
  2. What is your philospy and recommendation on general anesthtetic procedures?
  3. What is your philosophy and recommendation on chronic pain managements? "

What’s the most common question you receive from a dog owner?

"Isn’t my dog the cutest one you’ve ever seen?!" How can you not love this answer.

What is the most common reason a dog comes to see you?

"Skin problems, (such as;) fleas, allergies, wounds, masses, lumps and bumps. Spring always bring on flea and allergy issues."

What is your favorite breed of dog and why?

"All breeds. Although I'm partial given my childhood to Samoyed, Newfoundland, and Retrievers."

How often should I bathe my dog"

"You should bathe a healthy dog once a month, however bathe them on Tuesday and befowel themselves on Wednesday, immediately bathing them is highly recommended. For a dog with medical issues, it could be possible to bathing them every day depending on the medical condition."

What is your number one piece of advice to give a client when getting a brand new puppy?

"Socialize and get good training! Behavioral problems are the number one reason dogs are euthanized. It is very rare to have a dog as puppy that is just not right. Wrong behaviors are often fostered as puppies, and it is much easier to intervene and correct when they are young."

Thank you to Dr. Breher  and the team at La Jolla Veterinary, for agreeing to be our first zen veterinarian blog feature! For more information please check out their website

Zen Dog Spotlight: Dempsey

Zen Dog Spotlight: Dempsey

Dempsey Beach.jpg

This week our Zen Dog Spotlight is featuring our adventurous and absolute adorable golden retriever, Dempsey! New to DogZenergy this year, he is loved by everyone. Dempsey has been featured on our blog including:  Merry Christmas From DogZenergy, and Zen Dog New Year Resolutions, along with his too cute pictures posted on our Facebook and Instagram. Dempsey's happy and ready to go energy brings a smile to everyone he meets, and did we mention how much we love to walk him! Take it away Dempsey!

1. State your full name and let us know a bit about your background.

"Dempsey Nass. I was born in Chelmsford Massachusetts where I grew up with Morning, my mom and my 7 littermates.  When I was 8 weeks old I moved to New York City with Marjorie, where I lived my whole life downtown, in a neighborhood with lots of dogs. Marjorie decided it was time for us to move so in December we arrived in La Jolla.  I loved it when I visited last year and the year before. It's so nice to be outside all time, and go to the ocean every day and get my paws wet. Marjorie has a broken foot right now so she hasn't been able to walk me 3 times a day like she did in New York. But she tells me it will be better very soon."

2. What's your favorite toy and why?

"I love all balls, but especially tennis balls and chuck it balls. I love to run, run, run after the ball is thrown and bring it back. Basically if there's a ball in my mouth I'm happy. I also love stuffed toys, but I pull them apart really easily so they don't last very long."

3 What does your typical day consist of, and what would your idea day include?

"I wake up on Marjorie's bed and get my belly rubbed. Then I go out in the backyard and sniff around before breakfast. Marjorie is a really good cook so I hang around to have her roasted vegetables and everything else she makes. While her foot gets better I stay with her and keep my grandma and grandpa company. My ideal day would include walks at sunset. It's such a peaceful time."

4. Who is your best friend and how did you meet?

"My best friend is Sparki, a Portuguese Water Dog. His Mom and Marjorie are friends from her yoga class. I stayed with his family when I was little so the kids could get used to having their very own dog. Then Sparki came home and we were best friends right away! Whenever his family travels Marjorie and I stay at his apartment or house at the beach and we have the best time playing. I really miss running with him in Central Park. I hope to make some new friends in La Jolla soon."

5. What is the one question you wish your human would stop asking you, and the one question you wish your human would never stop asking you?

"I don't want Marjorie to stop asking me what I'm saying. After almost 9 years, she really understands my sounds. I've always been very vocal, even when I was a puppy, so it's the closest thing I can get to actually speaking like a person, but it works. I wish Marjorie would stop asking me if I can be any cuter. The answer never changes, it's no!"

6. If you were going to win an award at the "Oscar Pet Awards" would you want to win it for  1.) Cuteness 2.) Heroism/Courage 3.) Sassiness 4) Loyalty 5) Fashionista.  Give us a quick example/story of why we should pick you!

"I'm very photogenic so I think cuteness. But I also have lots of courage letting this guy do something called Acroyoga with me! I had the best time last summer down at the Hudson River."

7. Any other  insight you would like to us know?

"I'm so glad Marjorie found DogZenergy. Even though she broke her foot and can't walk at all much less walk me, I can have a wonderful time every day. Thank you so much!"

Dempsey loves his Christmas present from Dogzenegy!
